Chao “Louis” Ji and Brad Staten attended and presented their research at NCUR held at the University of North Carolina, Asheville April 7-9, 2016. With the generous support of the UNI College of Humanities, Arts, and Sciences (CHAS) a total of 13 undergraduates were able to participate in this national research conference.
Ji, a senior BS physics major, gave an oral presentation entitled “Observation of interlayer phonon modes in van der Waals heterostructures.” His research was conducted in Dr. Rui He’s research group in summer 2014. The research findings were published in Physical Review B, one of the leading scientific journals in Condensed Matter Physics.
Staten, a senior Biology: Biomedical major, presented a poster entitled “Spin-gapless semiconductivity and half metallicity in Heusler alloys.” This presentation highlighted results of a paper published recently by Dr. Pavel Lukashev, Brad and their collaborators from the South Dakota State University and the University of Nebraska – Lincoln. Brad has participated in Dr. Lukashev’s research for the last three semesters.
