The Physics Department faculty and staff welcomed the new physics majors on Friday, September 8, 2017 by showing up during their Physics I for Science and Engineering class with pizza and pop. Department Head Paul Shand introduced the faculty and staff. Winners of the Campanile Contest were announced and presented with prizes.
The UNI Campanile Contest is an annual contest to measure the height of the UNI Campanile. Originally, the height from architects' blueprints was used to judge winners, but in recent years the accepted height is considered to be the average of all reasonable measurements. This year's winners were physics major Dylan Blattner and physics teaching major Ernest Toutant III, who submitted a measurement in exact agreement with the average of the measurements of 83 teams over the past nine years. Physics major Zach Devore was awarded the prize for the most creative method of measurement, involving projectile motion calculations and photo scaling techniques.
