Coding Across Disciplines

Mary Sutton is a Junior at the University of Northern Iowa, majoring in Physics and Biochemistry. She had the chance to participate in the Summer Undergraduate Research Program doing research that focused on both of her fields of interest, which was featured on the UNI STEM website. Working along side UNI professor Dr. Ali Tabei, Mary teamed up with a lab at the University of Iowa to study a protein called RAD51 that binds to DNA. The goal of their research was to see how fast the protein binded to DNA and what factors made it bind, which would hopefully lead to anticancer therapies using the protein.
